The Connor Ballroom was transformed into majestic winter fiesta last Saturday night.

The ballroom was dimly lit with soft Christmas lights and mini lanterns that gave a tranquil, comfortable vibe.  The walls were colorfully decorated with flags from other countries representing the diversity that our international students bring. The festivities were for International Prom Around the World.

"The cultural atmosphere is invigorating and refreshing," said Maddie Heberline, senior accounting major.

Since prom is typically an American tradition, many international students had the opportunity of buying a prom dress for the first time this winter.

"I felt very excited to wear my traditional Chinese dress and spent a lot of time getting ready," said Angel Wang. "I also had a good nap before I came here, because a good nap is very important for ladies."

Ken Shinozaki, business and economics major from Japan, has never been to prom before.

"I expected it to be very exciting and assumed there would be many girls, and it turned out great," said Skinozaki.

There was much festivity with live Colombian Music from El Groupo Colombiano de Musica, the band of foreign language professor, Dr. Jose Alvarez.  El Groupo Colombiano de Musica came with high energy and charisma as they expressed their culture musically.

"I enjoy music like I enjoy teaching; I enjoy it so much, and I want share that energy with my students," said Alvarez.

A group of Latina ladies attended the prom to help the students learn Colombian dancing, also.

If the students decided to opt out of showing off their dance skills, they were able to sit and chat over delicious cookies, chips and dip.

Overall, approximately thirty people attended the prom and the dance floor was packed consistently. The International Prom Around the World allowed many international students to let loose and have a good time.
