The campus came alive with activity as students and faculty returned to begin classes last week. For many on campus, this can be a stressful time, especially for those arriving for the first time. To make the transition to college life a little smoother, campus groups developed "Welcome Week.
Exotic locals and elaborate hotels are common sights for tourists in Cuba, but a stark contrast is also present. Both the beauty and the poverty of Cuba can be seen at the photography exhibit in the Spiva Art Gallery until Sept. 19. The showing, a collection of photos taken in Cuba the past seven years, marked the start of the Cuba Semester.
Trapped in the rubble of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, New York Fire Department Battalion Commander, Richard "Pitch" Picciotto lay for four hours before being rescued. The highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse and the last fireman to escape the devastation, Picciotto was on the stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors of the North Tower when it collapsed.
It's infectious. What began as a Campus Activities Board meeting proposal has now become a full-fledged club, and it's spreading all over campus. "We wanted to address the issue of school spirit," said Julie Blackford, director of Student Activities. "Southern has been lacking in the past.
The Campus Activities Board wants to see more green and gold at the football games this semester. All of CAB's planned activities for the next year focus on increasing Missouri Southern's school spirit. The new club Gang Green was the main topic of the semester's first CAB meeting.
