New man steps into jazz band

This semester the Missouri Southern Jazz Orchestra welcomed a new director to its group. Dr. Jeremy Kushner is the new director for the Jazz Orchestra. When Dr. Philip Wise stepped down from that position and into the position of Department Music Head, he asked Kushner if he would be interested in leading the orchestra.

Campus offers voter registration

Oct. 6 set as last day to sign up

A need for on campus voter registration at Missouri Southern may have been long time coming. In the Student Services office, room 211 on the second floor of Billingsly Student Center, a student living in Missouri now can register to vote until Oct. 6 for the upcoming presidential election.

Crime lab frees up working space

Grants allow office to renovate additional classrooms

Since 1972, the Missouri Southern crime lab has been updated only a few times. Once was six years ago, when the lab gained some rooms from two adjoining classrooms. Two grants totaling $150,000 allowed the crime lab to renovate storage areas and another classroom for its use.

Athletes juggle studies, sports

Balance between school and sports not always easy

Time management seems to be the way to juggle academics and sports for the athletes at Missouri Southern. Sarah Wallace, sophomore secondary education major, said juggling sports and academics is difficult but it all boils down to time management. Wallace is on the cross country and track and field teams.

Blues lends mood to BBQ

Event hosts food, music, comedy

Shadows danced on the backdrop of skyscrapers. Candles lit the darkened area and one could hear the call and response of the blues band. On Sept. 15, as a part of Natural High Week, Campus Activities Board sponsored a Blue's, BBQ, and Comedy Night. The Impalas, the blues band for the evening, started off the evening with music while students dined on BBQ chicken, corn-on-the-cob, and a variety of desserts.

With little more than a minute past 5:30 p.m., the Student Senate opened its first business meeting of the year Sept. 22. Junior Spanish major and Senate president Eric Ducommun led the way for the new senators this semester. "I'm a pretty lax guy," he said.

After a moment of silence in respect for fallen Joplin Police officer and Missouri Southern alumnus Tim Nielson, the Board of Governors began its Sept. 17 meeting. The majority of the meeting concerned the Alumni Association presenting its "strategic plan".

Chart up for Pacemaker

The Chart has been selected as an Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker award. The award is one of the highest honors a college newspaper may receive. The ACP convention is Nov. 3-7 and the awards ceremony will be Nov. 6. This is the 15th time The Chart has been a finalist in the contest.
