Christmas is a time of family and fellowship, fun and parties. Not for international students, though. Many cannot afford a trip home for the holidays. Yermek Zhakipzhanov, freshman graphic design major, came to Missouri Southern last May.
A new carjacking scheme has become known. Culprits will cover rear windows with paper blocking vision. Drivers usually will not notice until they are in the car with the engine running and about to back out of a parking space. Most drivers will then get out of the car to remove the obstruction, leaving the car running.
Students freely navigate through the halls of Missouri Southern but find it difficult to navigate through Southern's Web site. Southern has been experiencing difficulty with its Web site due to the lack of designers. Rod Surber, director of public information, said he knows there is a problem and he is in the process of having it fixed.
Governors heard from University President Dr. Julio León and Dr. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies, about their trip to China. The trip was in response to an invitation by the Bejing Broadcasting University. León and Stebbins would like to build a relationship with the BBU after starting conversations with it a few years ago.
Due to a resolution passed by Student Senate, students will have something to throw around on campus. The resolution passed during the Nov. 17 Senate meeting, provides $1,000 toward the creation of a disc-golf course on campus. "It's kind of a growing trend," said Eric Norris, senator and student intramural sports director.
Students "wrapped up" the fall 2004 semester with help from the Campus Activities Board Dec. 7. CAB held a "wrap-up" party in the Student Life Center. The party allowed students to bring in the Christmas presents they had already purchased and wrap the presents themselves or have someone help wrap them.
Thumbs and fingers will now be getting more exercise thanks to Missouri Southern's faculty and staff. Recently, the Student Life Center was hooked up with new PlayStation 2's and television sets to accompany them. In total, there are four televisions and three PlayStations.
On Nov. 29, a handful of people gathered outside Webb City High School to protest Brad Matthewson, a 16-year-old student recently banned from the school by school administration for wearing gay pride T-shirts. The protesters are members of a Topeka church, Westboro Baptist Church, led by pastor Fred Phelps.
While some aspiring artists take their chances on "American Idol," others find recording opportunities elsewhere. Carrina Lickteig, senior music and general business major, recently released the contemporary album The One Beside You. Three weeks after Lickteig took a demo tape to Russell Simms of Simms Records, Simms called her back and offered her a recording deal.
Student Senate wrapped up its business year with its Dec. 1 meeting. During the meeting, the three remaining seats were filled. Freshman Austin Mayfield, sophomore Justin Cartwright and junior Jason Hare were present to fill the positions. The meeting was the last business meeting of the semester.
Students in the Spiva Library complain use of the printing paper is being used excessively. Wendy McGrane, library director, said, the policy for the computers in the library is the same policy for any other computer on campus. "The library used to charge for printing but not anymore," McGrane said.
Some editorial board changes will be coming to The Chart in the spring semester: Noelle Ott and Hallie Hocker will become sports editors. Randall Benson will become Online Editor. Jessica MacIntosh will return from a semester in France to take the associate editor position.
