Senate ended its Feb. 1 meeting with concern for the Biology Pond's transformation into an oriental garden. Kristen Duwe, Senate secretary, informed Senate that workers have already started cutting down trees at the pond and expressed concern for the habitat.
In November, Gov. Matt Blunt asked all colleges and universities to prepare for a 10 to 12-percent cut in their budgets. But now, he has recommended a two-percent increase in the appropriations for Missouri Southern. "It's a welcoming switch," said University President Julio León.
For seven years, Missouri Southern has tried to receive funding for a new health sciences building. Now, Gov. Matt Blunt has announced a plan which would fund the building, as well as projects for many other colleges and universities across the state. On Jan.
Leaving behind a legacy of dedication and caring, Dr. Jim Maupin died at age 83 Jan. 22. Maupin was the first dean of technology at Missouri Southern. "He had a strong military background," said University President Julio León. "His sense of timeliness and organization; it's always appreciated.
They patrol Missouri Southern's campus every day and talk with students daily. They are Department of Public Safety officers. "They are a good bunch of guys," said Ken Kennedy, DPS manager. Kennedy said the day shift officers work with students to help them with whatever needs they can provide.
Students living in the residence hall dormitories are gaining more visitation opportunities. At the start of the spring semester the visitation hours in Blaine and McCormick Halls will be extended an extra hour. Originally, the hours for these buildings ended at 11 p.
It's new media, and it's taking Joplin by storm. There has been an uprising in media outlets across Joplin. Publications such as the Joplin Tri-State Business Journal, The Joplin Herald, The Joplin Daily.com and The Current have all made an appearance to the Joplin community in recent months.
Still in talks, Missouri Southern and Southeast Missouri State University are planning at joint master's degree program in criminal justice. "It's an idea that we're trying to develop," said Dr. Richard McCallum, vice president for academic affairs. "It's very early.
Graduates gathered on Jan. 28 to give children an opportunity to explore what Missouri Southern has to offer. Elisa Bryant, alumni director coordinator for the Alumni Association, planned and managed the event which lasted from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. "[Legacy Day] is for all graduates of Missouri Southern," Bryant said.
Faculty, staff, alumni, students and anyone associated with Missouri Southern are welcome to participate in an upcoming contest. Sandi Gieson, manager of the SunGard SCT Banner administrative software project, reports the opening phase of the two-year project was launched successfully.
Joplin is adding a local National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (Norml) to the list of its many organizations. Kelly Maddy, president of the Joplin chapter of Norml, said he started the organization last November after being in charge of the annual Cannabis Revival at Shifferdecker Park.
Speech, debate squad sends two toward quarterfinal matches The Missouri Southern Speech and Debate Squad competed in the Annual Gorlock Gala Debate tournament from Jan. 26 to Jan. 29 at Webster University. In the Lincoln-Douglas debate, sophomores Michael Baca and Dylan Slagal qualified for elimination rounds.
