I was watching the 59th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 12th. I was patiently waiting until the end so I could be filled with joy and excitement to watch my favorite artist of all time, win Album of the year. However, that didn’t happen. Adele, who I believe is a superstar when it comes to singing won. Nonetheless, I believe that Beyoncé deserved that award. At the end of Adele accepting the award, she said that Beyoncé deserved it more. I couldn’t have agreed more.

Adele’s album 25 was fantastic and was jam packed with hit songs and great content. However, Beyoncé’s album Lemonade had not just one genre of music, but eight. It contained R&B, Hip Hop, Hip Hop/Rock fusion, Dance, Country, Ballad and Soul. It had all of those genres while telling a complete, cohesive story. Her story was not just told through the visual album of Lemonade, but through the music and the lyrics itself.

When Beyoncé accepted her award for best Urban Album earlier that night, she stated the story behind Lemonade. She created the album “to give voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness and our history.” The pain and struggles with topics shown in the visual album such as intuition, denial, apathy, emptiness, and at he end, resurrection.

Her album was full of controversy, such as touching on topics such as Black Lives Matter, police brutality and cultural appropriation. Its great for somebody who has such high power and huge young fan base such as Beyoncé to discuses these topics in music form. People weren’t listening to protests, so she took it upon herself to shed light on topics that needed to be heard.

She created not just music, but art with Lemonade. It showed a completely different side of herself to the world and allowed us to view topics that not every singer would dare bring to their music. That’s why I believe Beyoncé is the true winner of the Album of the Year.
